Cocktail Gifts for Whiskey Lovers: The Bottled Manhattan

Buying whiskey for a whiskey lover is a trap. They already have a favorite bottle, strong opinions about it, and probably a shelf of gift bottles they're too polite to open. Give them something they don't have: a proper Manhattan, made with craft whiskey from small distilleries and ready to pour.

Why a Manhattan is the whiskey lover's cocktail

It's whiskey, vermouth and nothing to hide behind. A Manhattan is the drink whiskey people order when they still want to taste the whiskey. Get the balance wrong and it's syrup. Get it right and it's silky, rich and serious.

There will always be a debate over the best whiskey to use, between the purists who love a spicy rye and the Kentucky-philes who love the sweet, oaky caramel of bourbon. We love both.

What's in ours

  • Craft whiskey from small distilleries in Virginia and Georgia: Copper Fox and Lazy Guy, depending on the batch. We blend young and older bourbon for smooth popcorn and caramel notes, then add a spicy, smoky, chocolatey rye to cut through the richness and balance the sweetness. It's the best of both worlds.
  • Our house 1887 Special Vermouth Liqueur, made with a jamminess that captures those old Prohibition-style cigar lounge Manhattans, where you had to whisper the right name to get in, but got to sip a piece of history.
  • Bottled at a proper 32% ABV, pouring a rich reddish-amber.
  • Three cocktails in every bottle, twelve per 4-Pack. It's our strongest, so each bottle goes further.

This is a Manhattan for whiskey lovers and Old Fashioned fans. We build it in the older style, like an Old Fashioned, so the whiskey and the rich vermouth complement each other but never overpower. It's a fantastic sipper.

Make it a gift

Every 4-Pack arrives in a beautiful gift box. To round it out, add a pair of heavy rocks glasses, a big-cube ice mold and a jar of good cocktail cherries. Then write a note: "For the nights you'd rather not stir."

How to serve it

  • Up: shake gently, then serve chilled in a chilled coupe with three dark cherries.
  • On the rocks: pour over one big cube with a wide orange peel.
